What happens from now until childbirth?

I am starting my weekly appointments this week as I am now 36 weeks along. My question is what happens at these weekly appointments? I am curious because this is my first child and I asked the doctor the purpose and what happens at these weekly appointments and all he said was "its routine" which doesn't really answer my question. Thanks!
