Childbirth questions for a health care professional?!?
One major risk is the mother can develop a pulmonary embolism. This happens as a result of the great pressure in the abdomen leading to venous stagnation in the lower extremities. In other words an expecting mother can develop a blood clot in a vein of the leg. During childbirth or thereafter, the blood clot (called a deep vein thrombosis) can become dislodged and travel to the lungs. In the lungs it can block blood flow to part of the lungs. Depending on the extent of blockage and the time in which it is treated, this condition could be fatal. For more information (i.e., symptoms, prevention) just google pulmonary embolism. I hope I helped lead you in the right direction. I wish you the best!
